Frequently Asked Questions

1 > How long should a roof last?

As a general rule of thumb, standard asphalt shingles will typically last 15-20 years, while architectural or premium asphalt shingles can last 20 – 30 years. However, the following factors can influence that lifespan:

  • Weather Conditions – Calgary’s climate can be harsh, with extreme temperature fluctuations, heavy snowfall, strong winds and powerful hail storms, all of which can impact the longevity of a roof.

  • Quality of Installation – Poor installation can lead to premature failures in a roofing system.

  • Maintenance – Regular maintenance, such as cleaning gutters, removing debris and addressing minor repairs promptly can extend the life of a roof.

  • Ventilation – Proper attic ventilation can prevent moisture buildup and heat damage, helping to prolong the roof’s life.

2 > How often should I have my roof inspected?

It is recommended to have your roof inspected at least once a year, however, certain conditions might require more frequent inspections:

  • Severe Weather – Inspections should follow events such as heavy storms, hail or strong winds.

  • Aging Roof – If your roof is on the older side, more frequent inspections can help catch issues early.

  • Visible Damage – If you notice missing shingles, leaks, etc. an inspection should be conducted immediately.

3 > My roof is leaking. Does this mean I need a new one?

Not necessarily. Many roofing issues can be repaired without needing a full replacement. The best way to determine the extent of the problem is to have a Grey Rock Group professional provide a proper evaluation. We'll advise you on the most viable and cost-effective course of action.

4 > How much will a new roof cost?

The cost of a new roof can vary widely based on the size and pitch of your roof, the materials chosen, the complexity of the installation and any additional features that your roof might have (skylights, chimneys or vents). 6 > How long does it take to have a new roof installed?

Roof installation is a very labor intensive process. Depending on the type of roof, the average time is anywhere between days to weeks. Due to the outdoor nature of the work, this time frame can be substantially affected by the weather. At Grey Rock Group, we pride ourselves on careful planning, tight project management and on-going client communication. As a result, we are often able to reduce some of the delays caused by bad weather and ensure that our clients are always kept up to speed on project progression and any delays.

7 > Why ventilate the attic?

Ventilating the attic is important for a number of reasons:

  • Temperature Regulation: proper ventilation helps to regulate the temperature in the attic. During the summer months, it prevents the attic from becoming excessively hot and during the winter months, it helps to maintain a colder attic temperature, reducing the risk of ice dam formation.

  • Moisture Control: ventilation helps to remove moisture that can accumulate in the attic, which can lead to mold growth, wood rot and structural damage if not properly managed.

  • Extending Roof Life: By reducing heat and moisture build up, attic ventilation helps to extend the lifespan of roofing materials. Excessive heats can cause shingles to deteriorate at a faster rate, while moisture can damage the roof decking and other components.

  • Improving Indoor Air Quality: proper ventilation ensures that any pollutants from insulation, building materials or other sources in the attic are vented out, contributing to better indoor air quality in the living spaces below.

  • Energy Efficiency: a well ventilated attic can maintain a more stable indoor environment thus reducing cooling and heating costs.
